Using this site

Getting the news

  • By email: you can simply register to our daily geonews newsletter (subscribe box top-right of this page)
  • By email: you can also register to our geospatial press releases newsletter
  • By RSS feed: you can subscribe to our rss feed with the software of your choice, such as via Google Reader or directly from within Thunderbird, Apple’s Mail or any other modern email application. Also available are custom RSS feeds: say you’re only interested in ESRI-related news, there is an RSS feed for the ESRI tag or for any other specific tag
  • By visiting the site regularly! We publish an average of 1-4 geonews daily
  • We also have the Slashgeo Twitter feed, a Facebook page and a Google+ page

How to contribute

  • Start by reading the news and share your knowledge and experience via comments
  • Contributing to Slashgeo can be fast and easy. You can submit pertinent geonews, generally, 10-15 lines summaries with appropriate links. Submitting a story that way can require from 2 to 5 minutes
  • You can give us a small, or big donation! Even if it’s only 5$, that’s still appreciated. See our top donors list on the right hand column of our main page. Slashgeo is managed by a registered non-profit organization
  • If you’re using Flattr, you can support us that way too: Flattr this
  • We also welcome enthusiastic editors who would like to join our team of volunteers

Donations: contributing and getting exposure on Slashgeo

  • The easiest and certainly the most financially efficient mean to get exposure on Slashgeo is to do a small donation
  • If your donation puts you amongst the top donors (see list on the right hand side column), you’ll get a link to your website on Slashgeo as long you remain a top donor. Since we don’t get donations often, you might stay there quite a while
  • Significant donations will also be mentioned directly in a story
  • Slashgeo reaches thousands of geospatial professionals every day. Just on Google Reader, we have over 8,600 subscribers (a number anyone can easily validate)
  • Any money generated by the site is used to pay for hosting and site maintenance. As of September, we are in the red
  • Slashgeo is managed by a registered non-profit organization in Canada, but we do not have the charity status and can’t deliver receipt for taxes
  • If you want to give small donation but want to make certain we use the money for hosting, you can donate to our host that ensures that your donation will only serve for hosting fees.
  • Another way to support Slashgeo is by using our DreamHost referrer code if you need an excellent web hosting service
  • As a bonus, anyone donating 5$ or more won’t see ads on Slashgeo for at least 5 years!

Ad banners on Slashgeo

  • First, we’re not fond of ad banners at Slashgeo - we don’t want to annoy our users. That said, we do have Google AdSense banners on top of our main page and the door isn’t entirely closed for occasional advertisement banners
