One great new tool to share spatial data is geotorrent. geoTorrent allows the efficient sharing of huge spatial data files. Amongst their newest additions (today!) you will find the Canadian Road Network and the Blue Marble global image from NASA.

LKS writes “Forbes is reporting that Google will team up with NASA to work on IT solutions and data management. What else might come of this collaboration? From the article - “Google’s engineers will be able to pick NASA’s brains for ideas on supercomputing design, which could help the company in its efforts to create products such as 3-D maps. “We already have Google Earth. We’d like to have Google Mars and Google Moon,” quipped Peter Norvig, director of search quality at Google. An updated press release can be found here.“

Directions Magazine has a book review of “Beginning MapServer - Open Source GIS Development”. The conclusion of the review: While further scrutiny reveals the gap between Google Maps and true GIS tools, closer scrutiny still does not reveal such gaps between proprietary Web mapping software and MapServer. And Beginning MapServer: Open Source GIS Development, appears to be the first glossy demonstration as to how narrow that gap really is.

Directions Magazine has an interview with George Percivall, the Open Geospatial Consortium’s (OGC) Executive Director for Interoperability Architecture. From the interview: OGC Web Services (OWS-3) is OGC’s next major advance in the development of open specifications that enable geospatial interoperability. OWS-3 involves a wide scope of activities, ranging from the acquisition of geospatial data from sensors to defining a “common infrastructure” for decision support.

MapQuest launches Navigation Device that Uses GPS for In-Car Directions

Rocky Mountain News have an article about the launch, by MapQuest, of a $699 navigation device that uses GPS for in-car directions. From the article: What it does: Uses Global Positioning System technology and preloaded maps to deliver turn-by-turn, voice-guided directions. 3-D maps and graphics depict the car’s progress toward the destination. Includes points of interest such as hotels, gas stations and parking lots, with audio and visual alerts as vehicle approaches one.
